When our pilot spotted this magnificent bull elephant with a poisoned arrow wound on his right side, swift action was vital. The SWT/KWS Tsavo Veterinary Unit, supported by our Air Wing, provided a rapid response, removing the arrowhead and treating the wound. Intervention that has afforded this giant of the plains a second chance! 15 minutes to save a life and spare an elephant agonising pain and suffering. Snares pose a lethal threat to wildlife. Left unchecked, these rudimentary devices can take down even nature’s greatest giants. We have witnessed the fatal consequences of snares far too many times: limbs severed, lives lost. Read the full story of how our Airwing and SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit ensured that on this occasion, the potential victim walked away before irreparable damage was done: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news #sheldricktrust #veterinary #vet #treatment #snare #kenya #wildfire #elephant #aerial #helicopter #animals #sheldrickwildlifetrust
Special delivery — Lima Lima has given birth! Her baby boy, Lenny, is an effervescent little elephant, just like his mum. We’re busy writing up the story, but couldn’t wait to share this joyful news with you! — It feels especially poignant that Lima Lima went into labour on Giving Tuesday. By saving one elephant’s life, we pave the way for so many others. Yesterday, as you rallied behind our cause, an orphan raised through our Orphans’ Project was bringing the next generation into the world. Sleep can sneak up on all of us! Warmed by the sun and with a belly full of milk, Korbessa kept drifting off to dreamland… only to startle herself awake again! Her attempt at an ever so casual – I was awake all along - exit didn’t quite go quite to plan, but it created the best and biggest smile of our day. Rescued from a well, Korbessa is one of over 75 orphaned elephants currently reliant on us. Christmas morning brought the most precious gift: Sonje, one of our ex-orphan elephants, introduced her first calf to the Umani herd. We’ve named her Sulwe, meaning ‘morning star’ in Luo, a fitting name for this bright, beautiful baby born as the dawn stretched across the Kibwezi Forest. Sulwe is the third calf born in Umani, to an orphan we rescued and raised. 🎉 Enjoy the full story of Sulwe’s arrival: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news #elephant #babyelephant #swt #wildlife #sheldricktrust #newbaby #babygirl #newborn #nature #animals #sweet #babyanimals #kenya #christmas #gift

Bean’s Bedtime! In the wild, rescued orphan warthog Mr Bean would have enjoyed the warmth of his mother, siblings, and a burrow at night. In our care, he has a hot water bottle! Every evening, Peter prepares Bean's bed-fellow, which the tiny piglet absolutely adores! We provide tailored care to each orphan we rescue. They are all individuals, plus, the needs of an elephant differ to those of a rhino, much as the needs of a warthog differ to a giraffe. These are all species currently being raised at our units. with the focus of helping them reclaim a life back in the wild when grown. One elephant’s breakfast is apparently another’s playground! Miale has no interest in eating lucerne – less than a month old, she has no teeth to chew and only has eyes for mum Mudanda’s milk – but all this hay offers excellent cushioning for this spirited girl’s morning games. A grandchild of our Orphans’ Project, watch and read about Miale’s first hours on earth: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news #sheldricktrust #elephants #babyelephant #newborn #play #wildlife #animals #sheldrickwildlifetrust #cute #bravado #grandchild
At only a month old, Miale is a long way from perfecting the art of dust bathing, but you’ve got to admire her effort! Over time, she will learn crucial skills like these from her mother and herd – all orphan elephants rescued and raised by the Sheldrick Trust, and now successfully living in the wild. If you missed Miale’s arrival - her mum Mudanda gave birth right outside our Voi Stockades - you can read about it & watch a video of an hours old Miale at: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/news/updates/mudanda-miale #sheldricktrust #babyelephant #animalrescue #kenya #wildlife #animals #elephant #sheldrickwildlifetrust #dust #mum #newbaby #learning

When they return from time off, our Keepers are given the warmest welcome ‘home’ by their elephant family. ‘If and when ready’ would be an apt mantra for rescued black rhino Chamboi. Only 14-months old, he already exudes one of his species’ most infamous traits, stubbornness! Fortunately, for his Keepers, it’s short lived, as he doesn’t want to be left behind as he once was when discovered all alone as an orphan! Mr Bean is always on the go! From attacking boots – a favourite pastime – to sticking his nose into other people’s business, guzzling milk, and trotting behind Keeper Peter. But, we found his pause button: the little rescued warthog loves a neck scratch, and our pilot Roan has found just the right spot! Without our supporters, we wouldn’t be positioned to rescue & raise orphaned wildlife, or protect the habitats into which they are rewilded 🙏🏻 Discover our work: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org #wildlife #sheldricktrust #animals #animalrescue #cute #sheldrickwildlifetrust #swt #warthog #pumba #scratch #boots #games #kenya #africa
A Christmas miracle! In the early hours of Christmas Day, Sonje presented our Umani family with the most wonderful gift: her first child, a newborn baby girl. We have named her Sulwe, which means ‘morning star’ in the Luo language. Sonje is one of Umani’s pioneering elephants. Shot by poachers as a baby, she miraculously survived but will always walk with a serious limp. But as Sonje reminds us, even the most far-gone cases have hope. Now, Sonje has welcomed her very own baby into the world! We’re putting together the full story, but we couldn’t wait to share this wonderful news with you. #sheldricktrust #elephants #kenya #animals #baby #babyelephant #newlife #newborn #christmas #miracle #animalrescue #conservation #babygirl #wildlife #nature
If there's water around, our 'little frog' will be submerged in it, or splashing it around with her trunk! Korbessa just loves water, which might come as a surprise given that, when only days old, she was found trapped in a well! NEW BABY ANNOUCEMENT! Just 2 days after Lima Lima gave birth to her first calf, Lenny, in Umani, Kinna proudly walked up to our Ithumba Stockades to introduce her third! A beautiful baby girl we've named Kito, which means 'precious jewel'. Kinna was just a newborn herself when rescued from the mud in 1999. Over the next quarter of a century she's gone from orphan, to one of Ithumba's three founding members, to a mother of three! The whole family came to celebrate the news with us, and we couldn’t be prouder of all she’s accomplished. IT’S ANOTHER BOY! Wild-living orphan Lenana has just introduced us to her second son, Laki. It’s nearly two months since Lenana's last visit, but this proud mum (of two) has returned to Ithumba flanked by her firstborn son, Lapa, and her new calf. Lenana paraded the latest member of the family outside the stockades, seemingly inviting the Keepers who raised her to admire little Laki, as we have named him. Once introductions were complete, the trio disappeared into the lush Tsavo wilderness. Laki’s arrival is a testament to Lenana’s incredible journey from orphan to a thriving, wild-living matriarch. He is also the 69th calf born to an elephant we have rescued, raised, and rewilded, each reminding us that when we save an orphan it is about both that individual, and the future impact they might have for their species.
