How I made this DIY balloon arch for my son’s birthday party …my second-ever attempt, which clearly makes me a certified balloon engineer now 🎈💁🏼‍♀️ I was quoted over £200 (!!) so I grabbed a kit for £8.99 from Amazon, a balloon pump, and DIY’d one myself. Here’s what I used:
– Balloon garland kit (my kit had 120 balloons but I definitely didn’t use all of them) - Modelling balloons
– Electric balloon pump (game changer)
– Balloon Glue dots
– Command hooks to hang if you’re not using an arch
– Sheer determination If you're a fellow mum searching “how to make a balloon arch” or “budget birthday party ideas,” this is 100% doable — even if you’re not naturally crafty. Name someone more determined to make something work than a mum trying to create a better life for her kids? When I started posting publicly on social media 8 years ago, it was to stay connected to the outside world when I felt very lonely at home with a newborn. Fast forward 9 months when maternity leave was almost up, the femcare company I had been working at before baby arrived, made it impossible for me to return. Shortly after, baby number 2 arrived & during lockdown my social media following started to grow. Along with doing some freelance marketing work to earn a bit of money, I could see there was an opportunity to commercialise what I was doing on social media. I put all my energy into building a platform where brands I was already loving and using might want to work with me, although there was no guarantee this would work! The sacrifice that comes with this when you’re doing it to be around for your kids during the day, is working every evening, 7 days a week. This is absolutely NOT me complaining, it’s the trade-off for a lifestyle that I’m so grateful for, but it’s the side of content creation as a parent that I think goes unseen. And what that means, when someone asks me ‘what do you do once the kids go to bed?’ is, tidy up, work then go to bed. We didn’t go to therapy because things were awful. We were just stuck in the same frustrating loop; snapping, shutting down, misreading each other. And with two small kids, two businesses, and trying to buy a house during lockdown… it felt like everything was against us. And we were against each other too. Therapy taught us how to communicate better and helped us shift from me vs him to us vs the problem. We’re not therapists. It's called balance! I didn't realise this was even a tradition until I mentioned it to a friend and she said, oh that's so cute, I'm pinching that tradition! But since Oscar started school we've done this and it actually makes sense for so many reasons. 1. branded cereal can be pricey so we buy it less frequently 2. my kids are quicky picky so they don't eat great at school but they've always been happy eating a more substantial and nutritionally dense meals like porridge & baked oats for breakfast so I know they're fuelled up for the day 3. because some foods are every day foods, some are 'sometimes' foods and some are 'rarely' foods. There's no good or bad and nothing is banned, this is our version of balance 4. it's a bit of fun - the kids enjoy picking it out & I enjoy a day off from the monotony of weekday breakfasts too!
