One might be surprised that I would ever be ok helping a mom forward-face their 2-year-old… but let’s talk about it. As a CPST, I always recommend rear-facing as long as possible. But ultimately, my job is to educate, not dictate and at the end of the day the decision is up to the child’s caretaker and they all have their own reasons as to why they prefer to forward face as soon as they can. The current law allows forward-facing at age 2 in my state, and while rear-facing longer is best, we work within a good ,better , best framework. If a parent is set on forward-facing, I’ll make sure I educate on why rear facing is suggested but I will still make sure it is installed properly for a forward facing seat! Let’s talk about Baltic amber teething necklaces because cute accessories aren’t always safe. These necklaces are marketed as natural pain relievers, claiming the amber releases succinic acid that absorbs through the skin to ease teething pain. But here’s the truth there’s zero scientific evidence to support those claims. No peer-reviewed studies have proven that amber actually works this way or at all for teething. Infact quite the opposite it was found that unless the skin is 392 degrees Fahrenheit nothing is being released from the necklace. What is proven? Strangulation is a real risk. These necklaces can catch on crib rails or clothing, especially dangerous during sleep. Choking is a concern. If the string breaks, small beads can easily become choking hazards. Skin irritation can happen. Some babies develop rashes or reactions to the amber or string. There have been bacteria found on necklaces of sick children at children’s hospitals seaming to be the cause of many of their illnesses. And these necklaces give a false sense of security. Parents may delay using safer, proven methods like gum massage, chilled teethers, or medication when needed. Even the AAP and FDA have warned against teething jewelry due to these risks. This week is CPR Awareness Week ❤️ and it’s personal for me. When my son Deacon was strangled by his Baltic amber teething necklace at daycare, CPR and 911 weren’t called right away. I find myself wondering if things would be different had they done the right thing. As a child safety advocate, I never thought I’d be the parent who lost a child at an amusement park but it happened. I became part of the statistic: 1 in 3 children will get separated from their caregiver in a public place. Thankfully, we had a plan. Thanks to being prepared and many conversations with my child on what to do in this situation I was reunited with my son immediately. Now, I share tips with other parents to help prevent this from happening: ✔️ Assign who’s on “kid duty” in your group ✔️ Take a photo of your child that morning, so you have a visual reference ✔️ Use tools like SafetyTat, which gives another adult a quick way to reach you if your child is lost I highly recommend keeping a pack (or two) in your parenting toolkit especially for crowded outings like amusement parks, fairs, or field trips. More than halfway there, and the kicks are getting stronger and so am I. I’m so grateful for twin girls on the way. I’ve always dreamed of recreating the mother-daughter bond I had growing up, but some of my most cherished memories also live on the baseball field with my brother believe it or some of his closest friends to this day are from that field. I watched my mom become ‘that baseball mom’ and I couldn’t wait for that chapter too. After losing my son Deacon, I wasn’t sure I’d ever get that chance… but then came Rhett.
