Happy new year yall! Here’s my set of hack squats from today to ring in the new year. Read below for a bit more nuance. To be clear you don’t have to train TO failure every single working set. It’s likely better from a fatigue and recover standpoint to stop 1-2 reps shy of that. This post is for the people who stop their sets as soon as things start to feel a little uncomfortable and never get near failure. Stop going to the gym to do 20 warm up sets. This is why so many people hit a wall with their growth a couple years into lifting. If your perception of effort is holding you back due to how uncomfy the set is getting then perhaps work in a more moderate rep range between 4-10 reps. Rest longer 2-3 minutes. Always out of breath? Again try less reps and work on your cardio if you’re still getting winded even when using a more moderate rep range. Getting close to failure is not easy. You have to learn to push yourself while maintaining your technique. But once you’ve mastered this you’ll see much better gains over time. Especially if you’ve been stuck spinning your wheels. You guys seemed to like the last in person session critique so here’s another covering pulldowns for the lower lats. His form wasn’t necessarily wrong, the adjustments made were goal specific. These are tips I’d use if you’re looking to grow some big lats. The basics work. Some other good alternatives that also train that shortened position- Donkey and cable kickbacks to train the glutes unilaterally. I’m partial to doing them on the smith machine kneeling as I’ve found it to be one of the easiest to set up ways to load the movement that also has good bracing compared to standing cable kickbacks.
